La Redoute de Sablanceaux

The building was constructed in the shape of a square with its sides measuring 45m each one and set at the centre of a large entrenchment. It was built in 1674 according to Vauban’s directives and was designed to block the peninsula of Sablanceaux.

In 1685, the Sun King’s most talented engineer considered this position to be the most exposed one of all the kingdom. in 1627, the Duke of Buckingham ordered 10,000 English soldiers to land on two beautiful sand beaches and La Pallice oceanic trench.

In 1862, the whole building was repaired so as to be used as a support for the powerful battery installed further east.
