Rivedoux-Plage : between history and heritage

You come to spend a day on the Ile de Ré where you decide to stop at Rivedoux-Plage and wonder what is behind this village with its soft air of dolce farniente?

Rivedoux-Plage is the link between the Ile de Ré, the bridge, La Rochelle and the continent. It is also a unique point of view bordered by the "pertuis Breton" and the "pertuis d'Antioche".
In order not to miss anything of your experience in Rivedoux-Plage, you should start your visit by the South Beach, to observe the Chauveau Lighthouse. Located in the sea at 1,200 meters, it is accessible at low tide by a dike. For the second step of your journey, let's take the bike back to the rue de la Fontaine, for a stop at the village fountain. Built in 1930, this well was the only water distribution point of the village and it was the witness during many years of exchanges and meetings.
Not far from there, you will find La Redoute, rue des douves, built by the engineer Vauban in 1673 to defend this part of the coastline.
Continue towards Avenue de la Plage to discover the church Notre-Dame de Lourdes, whose bell tower reminds one of the churches of Loix or Les Portes-en-Ré, and whose main facade will remind you of the porticoes and pediments of ancient churches.
A few steps from the church, you can fill your basket at the village market with all the local delicacies, then get back on your bike in the direction of the tide mill, built in 1845. If the tide is out and you ride down to the tidal flats at the foot of the old water mill, you should see the stone arch that was the entrance for the tide to power the mill wheel.
